Important information for Simple Self Stores customers
You may have received a rates bill from North Lanarkshire council. Please do not panic; this does not mean you have a payment to make.
Due to a recent change in how Business Rates are issued across the Lanarkshire and Glasgow council areas, councils have started issuing individual rates notices directly to personal and business self storage customers instead of billing the self storage company.
However, your storage unit is eligible for 100% Business Rates Relief.
Why have I received a rates bill?
Previously, the self storage facility was responsible for the rates process; however, following a change in council procedures, each customer with a rented storage unit is now being issued their own individual rates bill.
We have spent time discussing this change with the councils and highlighting the unnecessary administration this creates for both customers and businesses. However, this process has now been introduced across the Lanarkshire and Glasgow council areas.
Will I have to pay the bill?
No, you will not have to pay the bill. Storage customers are entitled to 100% rates relief where the rental value falls below the qualifying threshold.
All rented properties in Scotland under £12,000 a year are entitled to 100% rate relief, meaning there should be no cost to you once the correct form has been completed.
What do I need to do?
To make sure your bill is cleared, please complete the Rate Relief Form below. Once this has been submitted, we will provide the information to North Lanarkshire Council on your behalf.
You have two options:
- Complete the paper form included with your rates notice and submit it directly to North Lanarkshire Council yourself; or
- Complete our electronic Rate Relief Form, and we will submit the required information to North Lanarkshire Council on your behalf.
Important: Cancelling your unit will not remove the bill
If you have received a rates bill, cancelling your storage will not remove this charge.
The only way to clear the bill and ensure you receive the relief you are entitled to is by completing the rate relief form.
Failing to complete the form may result in a financial penalty.
